On the 4th of July Norco held our second in a series of Organic Dairy Farming workshops and field days. The field day involved a farm walk at the Eggert’s organic dairy farm. Chris Eggert spoke about the challenges and successes he has had on their organic journey over the past 15+ years. We saw and Chris spoke about the soil, pasture, herd, dairy, composting facilities and organic egg enterprise that compliments the Eggert’s organic dairy farm.
Chris was very forthcoming with details on how they manage their farm using the Certified Organic Standards to successfully produce organic milk on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Participants also heard from Kevin Beecroft, Peter Hastie and other representatives from organic businesses to boost the information provided by Chris. A main aim of the day was to add to the networking team we are fostering to support suppliers who are considering conversion, are already in-conversion or are certified organic.
We had 43 people in attendance and the overwhelming feedback from participants was that it was a valuable and informative day. The day was topped off with an amazing morning tea and lunch made by Jenny Eggert full of organic produce from the farm and local organic businesses. Keep an eye out for the next workshop in the series which will most likely be organic dairy farming budgeting and cost of production figures focused.
Norco would sincerely like to thank Chris and Ann Eggert and Paul and Jenny Eggert for hosting this field and giving everyone present a valuable insight into the operation of a successful organic farm.
